Adaptive Sports is excited to announce the launch of its first ever Summer Programming! 

There are a variety of activities to choose from:

  1. Outdoor Summer Experiences- Registration Begins June 5 2023

Starting July 2023, ASSP is offering accessible summer outdoor experiences to individuals living with neuro-divergent challenges. Participate in hiking, Stand Up Paddle boarding, Canoeing and Mountain Biking. Try one activity, or try them all! 

  1. Kootenay Adaptive Sport Association (KASA) at Sun Peaks

The weekend of August 12-13, ASSP in partnership with Sun Peaks Resort LLP, will play host to Kootenay Adaptive Sports Association. Mike Reidiger and the team from KASA will bring their amazing adaptive mountain bikes along with certified instructors to provide the Kamloops and Sun Peaks community the chance to ride their adaptive bikes on the Valley Trail and/or the progression park!

CADS Membership Required for Participation in all Summer Experiences

CADS/BCAS/ASSP Membership Required to participate in all programs. Membership is valid from July 1 2023-June 30th 2024. Membership allows for participation in our 2023-24 Summer & Winter programming. 

CADS Student Yearly Membership $65 

CADS Friend/Caregiver Yearly Membership $51

CADS 1 Day $10*

*It is possible to purchase a 1 day membership to participate in an activity for one day, however the cost of the total yearly membership is not pro-rated if you choose to purchase it at a later date. 

Expert Instructors paired with ASSP’s certified Volunteer Instructors🤝

We’ve procured expert instructors in each outdoor experience to provide the very best instruction/guidance in a variety of activities. Paired alongside the seasoned experts are ASSP’s fully CADS trained volunteer instructors, who will provide added support for each student. A minimum of 2 volunteer instructors will assist at each activity. More volunteers may be added according to the needs of individual students.

1.HIKING 🏔️

Experience the very best of what the Sun Peaks alpine playground has to offer; from panoramic views and vivid wildflowers to artifacts of days past and the rich history behind them! Led by two experienced guides provided by Sun Peaks Sports School with assistance from ASSP’s CADS trained volunteer instructors.

2.SUP 🏄🏽

Stand Up Paddle Boarding with Bodie Shandro of paddlesurfit. Learn to Stand Up Paddle with “Canada’s first professionally certified instructor,” Bodie Shandro. Lesson covers equipment familiarization, dry-land instruction, water safety, board transport, stance and balance and fundamental paddling techniques. All equipment is included (board, paddle, PFD and leash).

Please Note: Lessons are held at Surfit’s location at Heffley Lake. To access the waterfront, individuals are required to navigate a steep, rugged trail down to the dock.  Know before you Go/Driving Directions

3.CANOEING 🛶

Kamloops Canoe & Kayak Club (KCKC) – Family Paddle Nights

Inclusive paddle nights for families! Come one, come all! Two hour paddle night with KCKC staff dedicated to our group + our very own CADS volunteers supporting the fun! The evening can include voyageur canoeing (all in one boat), kayaking or individual canoeing, depending on the group’s interest and the weather.

4.MOUNTAIN BIKING 🚵🏽‍♂️

Introduction to Mountain Biking with Heidi MacGowan. Join Professional Mountain Bike Instructors Association (PMBIA) certified Sun Peaks local, Heidi MacGowan, for an introduction to mountain biking! With mountain biking being her number one summer passion, she has been biking Sun Peaks’ trails for 20 years, and loves the variety of new trails and well-maintained old trails. Heidi has experience teaching all ages of new to advanced riders, from 2 – 70 years old! Her love for bikes and coaching shows through her personable approach to tune each lesson to the rider’s abilities and comfort level. 

Intro to Mountain Biking is offered to those able to ride a bike, have a mountain bike with disc brakes, and are starting to ride “off-road” trails. A proper-fitting helmet and close-toed shoes are required.

Lesson includes:

  • Bike safety check
  • Foundational skills
  • Trail etiquette
  • Green trail ride to use the trail’s terrain to gain confidence and have fun!

Summer Outdoor Experiences Registration Process

Registration Begins June 5  2023

Registration Requirements

  1. Set up Profile in Snowline
  2. Purchase Membership for 2023-24 Season (good for winter programs too!)
  3. Complete CADS Waivers
  4. Complete Medical Form/Waiver
  5. Complete Third Party Waivers if applicable
  6. Registration submitted for review
  7. Registration accepted
  8. Provide payment for program fees

Registration Policies

  1. Membership is required for participation in all programs. Membership fees are non-refundable.
  2. Methods of Payment: Online payments only. Credit Cards accepted, VISA & MASTERCARD.
  3. Autism funding accepted. Please inform the office at time of booking by emailing adaptivesportsatsunpeaks@gmail.com. Include first and last name of student and program AFU funding should be applied to. For more info go to Autism Funding.
  4. Programs will run pending registration. If cancellation is necessary, ASSP will notify you and fees will be fully refunded.
  5. Winter Programming – locals registration is limited to a maximum total of 10 lessons for locals lesson sets and drop-ins combined.
  6. Winter Programming – out of town guests registration is limited to a maximum total of 10 drop-in lessons.
  7. Force Majeure – No refunds will be issued if a lesson or program is cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances such as inclement weather, power outages etc.
  8. Cold Weather Policy – Lessons/programs cancelled if the temperature is -15 degrees celsius or colder, -12 degrees celsius for sit-skiers.
